Alberto Gonzales
August 29, 2007

Alberto Gonzales was destined for a fall the day that he was sworn in as Attorney General. The Democrats could not and would not tolerate an Hispanic Republican because in their eyes, they own the Hispanic voters. He was treated like a common thief instead of a gentleman that was the son of a construction worker, a graduate of Harvard Law School and finally reaching the justice Department as Attorney General of the United States. He was accused of lying, undermining the system of checks and balances, he was accused of supporting the Patriot Act and battling terrorism. He is blamed for the firing of US Attorneys and much more by Democrat head hunters headed up by one of the most egregious Senators in the Senate, none-other than Senator Leahy followed closely by Chuck Shumer. The only unifying theme the Democrats have exhibited since last January is unremitting hostility towared Bush and executive power in general. There is no substance to the claims that Gonzales or any one else acted improperly in removing U.S. Attorneys, who are political appointees and can properly be fired based on political considerations as did President Clinton when he fired 90 or so U.S. Attorneys during his administration. Claims that Gonzales committed perjury are groundless. Congress has attempted again and again to usurp the president's legitimate power and to refuse any constitutionally suspect compromises with the Senate. Gonzales realized that we are at war with an enemy unlike any we have ever faced before and that we need every tool available to prevent another 9/11.Those tools include the ability to scrutinize e-mails and phone calls between domestic sources and suspected terrorists and their accomplices. They also include doing all that is necessary to get future information about future attacks out of suspected terrorists in our custody. These programs have foiled terrorists attacks and saved innocent lives. Gonzales did his job legally and effectively without blabbing about it to the media. The current do-nothing Democrat Congress can only stir up subpaenas and hearings. At least President Bush tried to reform social security, re-juvenated the economy with tax cuts, increased government revenues, is reducing the deficit with a war going on, passed No-Child left behind, got a prescription drug bill passed and a lot more but gets no credit from a hateful press and ineffectual congress.
